Sustainable Packaging

Responding to the need for environmental protection and the voices of consumers globally to replace plastic with more environmentally friendly materials, companies worldwide are increasingly investments in sustainable packaging for their products.

Environmental issues that led the whole world to a dead end and caused intense concern, have led to the need for environmental, economic and social sustainability. The need for sustainability and the adoption of circular economy as an alternative economic model for sustainable production and consumption affects and shapes the packaging sector. It is also a fact that in recent years there has been an even stronger consumer preference for companies and brands that are conscious of climate change and opt for packaging with a low environmental footprint for their products.

Consumer demands for climate change awareness, legislation to phase out plastic cups and straws and replace them with products made from recyclable materials, the introduction of a recycling fee on plastic beverage bottles, and directives to reduce the environmental impact of certain plastic products mark new developments and trends in sustainable packaging around the world. More and more companies both in Greece and abroad, from various industries, invest in circular economy, use fully recyclable packaging for their products, opt for packaging that is biodegradable or suitable for composting or replace all packaging with eco-friendly Tetra Pak packaging. And this is done while keeping the integrity of the brand image.

Packaging and circular economy

The packaging sector is vital to the global transition towards a circular economy, given its ability to recycle materials. According to the action plan for circular economy 2.0, all packaging should be reusable or recycled by 2030. Therefore, all packaging materials produced now and to be produced in the future should be driven by the pursuit of the circular economy objective, which focuses on eco-design, established and new recycling technologies and strengthening of measures to protect the environment.

The Global Pack trade show seeks to present professionals with new practices and modern technologies that contribute to the sustainable design of packaging.
